The definition used for a describing a doula often goes something like this-
“A doula is an educational, emotional and physical support person during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period.”
Straightforward enough, right? Maybe not! Let me highlight something that you might have missed in that sentence…
“A doula is an educational, emotional and physical support person during PREGNANCY, labor, birth and the postpartum period.”
Doulas are not just support for childbirth! Though the largest chunk of time your doula spends with you is usually at your birth, we also support you during every stage of your pregnancy, as labor begins and after your baby is born.
With that in mind, it is GREAT to hire a doula as early in your pregnancy as possible! Here are three reasons why–
No matter how many times you have been pregnant or how many kids you have, there are new situations that arise in every pregnancy. Are you sure that weird symptom you are having is normal? Want a second opinion on something you read online? Need a recommendation for the best pregnancy pillow? Check in with your doula! She is a great person to go to and will point you to a health care professional if needed. There are so many changes that happen during the first and second trimester of pregnancy, and we love helping support you through them all!
Comfortability/ Ease of Relationship
Pregnancy and birth can be a very intimate time in a woman’s life. Remember the first visit you had with your OB/ Midwife and how it took a little while to fully be comfortable in their presence? The same goes for your doula! The earlier you can meet and get to know who she is the more able you are to trust her and work with her throughout your pregnancy and especially at your birth!
Peace of Mind
It is said that a pregnant mom will go through a “nesting” phase close to the end of her pregnancy. Though this is often referred to in regards to her baby’s nursery, her house, or her “go” bag for the birth center or hospital, it also applies to the details of her birth! If you are looking for a doula or working out hospital details towards the end of pregnancy it can add unnecessary stress and keep you from being able to relax. Having all of the details ironed out gives you the peace of mind you need to bring your baby into the world. No one wants to be scrambling at the last minute!
Are you pregnant? Think about hiring a doula early on! It will save you undue stress and worry in your third trimester, as well as give you a point person that can help you have the most amazing pregnancy, as well as birth!
